Classic and Timeless Christmas Decor
The holiday season is upon us in full force, and in my humble opinion, there’s no better way to set the mood than adorning your home with beautiful and festive decor. If you’ve waited until now to decorate, here is some inspiration on key areas of your home to decorate. Whether you prefer a traditional, minimalist, or modern look, there are countless options available to help you achieve a style that will warm your home to create an inviting environment for all to enjoy this holiday season.
Holiday Front Door and Exterior
Decorating your front door and entryway is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to add some festive cheer to your home. The first step I would recommend is to choose the right colours to complement your home’s exterior and to stick to a theme. I personally try to stick to a cohesive theme for my entire household. From there, there are countless options for adding seasonal décor to your doorstep, from traditional evergreen wreaths to more modern display options with ornaments, ribbons, and lights. If you’re stuck or feeling overwhelmed, let me provide you with my mother’s advice that you can use in almost any scenario, the KISS method. Sounds cute, right? Keep it simple, Stupid (KISS)! Start with a plain wreath and evergreen branches and then add Christmas picks and ribbons that you can find your local garden centre. If you’re in the Greater Toronto Area the store I recommend is Sheridan Nurseries. While their inventory does usually cost a bit more, I previously have been able to save many of the picks I used for my own Christmas Planters and reuse them for a few years. After adding picks and ribbons, you may consider illuminating your entrance to create a warm and inviting ambiance that welcomes guests and passersby alike. Twinkling fairy lights, whimsical lanterns, and even luminaries can create an unforgettable holiday welcome.
Christmas Mantle
One area that I always feel is a focal point is the mantle or fireplace. I find the fireplace and hearth serves as the perfect canvas to display festive touches.
Carry on your theme into your home with garlands, natural touches and pops of holiday colour. Whether it’s traditional reds and greens, earth tones of champagne, gold and silver, or rustic woodland, a cohesive colour scheme will help tie your room together. Incorporate additional items that speak to your personality such as a collection of candles, or a string of twinkling lights, or heirloom pieces that have been passed down by generations. These touches will anchor your design. To add height and dimension choose varying sizes of items such as ornaments, framed family festive photos, or decorative figurines placed at different levels. Finally, bring the outdoors in by adding natural elements, such as pinecones, fir branches, eucalyptus branches.
Decorating your Christmas Tree
When it comes to Christmas tree decor, the options are endless. Let the colour scheme or theme you’ve chosen for your home cohesively flow through to your Christmas tree.
Decide whether you will choose a fresh or artificial tree, then assemble. Next, gather decorations, lights, garlands and anything else you will add to your tree. For a touch of texture, garlands made from tinsel or ribbon can add sparkle. Add tree picks such as feathers or berries for a pop of colour. Know that while a tree topper is beautiful, it is not always necessary. If adding a tree topper, choices range from the classic angels or star, to more unique designs like a ribbon bow or pick crown.
Remember that your tree skirt or collar add to your design just as beautifully wrapped presents will. When choosing wrapping paper, pick sheets that will tie in with the your colour scheme. Add interest with textured ribbon such as velvet or twine. If you want to take it to the next step you can also add dried fruit slices to the parcels which is a trending choice this year.
Decorating your Christmas tree is all about making it uniquely yours, so have fun with it!
Additional areas of my home where I add touches of Christmas decor are my kitchen, bedrooms, and guest bath. This can be as simple as adding festive table runners, holiday wall plugs, and freshly planted potted plants with Christmas flowers.
