Mother’s Day is May 14th this 2023. If you haven’t picked up a gift yet you’re in luck because we’re going to outline the perfect Mother’s Day gift idea right here! This post is sure to be short and sweet so you can spend less time reading and more time getting what you need in time to gift it to Mom. It may seem a bit cliche, but your go to gift is going to be a beautifully potted plant. This post is all about how to put together a luxury potted plant for Mother’s Day.

What You’ll Need

You’ll only need to pick up 5 items for this gift, and you can find these at Home Depot, Walmart, Canadian Tire or any garden centre. Here’s the one and only thing I’ll strongly suggest, buy your mother a beautiful planter because you know that she would never splurge on herself in that way. Depending on your mom and her interests you can purchase a low maintenance house plant, or a herb planter that can be kept indoors or out. See below for your list of items:

  • Potting Soil
  • Rocks for drainage
  • Plants
  • Moss
  • A beautiful planter

How To Build the Mother’s Day Planter

Step 1

Take your pot and layer the drainage stones at the bottom. This will ensure that the plant is never drowning in water!

Step 2

Add soil to the pot. Since this is a planter you’ll want to ensure you’re using a potting mix which is a soil that’s enriched with minerals for your plants and will help to maintain moisture levels. I used Miracle Gro Indoor Potting Mix. You’ll want to fill your pot almost to the top. Fill to about 1/2″-1″ from the top.

Step 3

It’s time to add your plants! Be sure not to overcrowd plants as you want to leave room for them to grow into the pot. After you’ve finished planting it’s time to give it a quick water. If you’ve watched my reel on Instagram, then you’ve seen me using my daughter’s toy watering can for this part!

Step 4

The last and final step of creating this beautiful mother’s day gift is to add the moss to the top of your soil. This will act as a decorative piece but also help to maintain the moisture levels and keep your plant from drying out completely. There are many types of moss that you can purchase for decorative purposes, my preference is Sheet Moss

Happy shopping and enjoy your Mother’s Day! I’ll be enjoying my weekend with Georgia and my own Mother. Feel free to follow along on Instagram as I post some stories of how we spend our weekend. My Mom and I have already enjoyed a late night out at Cineplex where we saw Book Club 2 in VIP theatres. I’ve even gotten to visit the nail salon for a fresh manicure. Next up Georgia and I will be enjoying the beautiful weather.

I would love to know your plans this weekend, if you’ve potted up any plants for yourself or to gift to someone else. I find that it’s a cathartic exercise and brings so much joy to care for them daily. Feel free to leave a comment below to let me know if you’ve been gardening, or what you gifted your mom for Mother’s Day!
